H.O.T curling league Awards

The Harmer Trophy - League Championship Award

In 1957, the League Champions were awarded the Nowlan Trophy for the Seasonal Championship.

It was proudly awarded for 15 years until it was replaced by the Harmer Trophy. In January 2016 the Harmer Trophy was refurbished to display the full winning history for which it was intended and now displays it in all it's glory!

The Nowlan Trophy - Playoff Award for the Champions of Division "A"

In 1972, the Nowlan Trophy was first introduced as the Division "B" Champions trophy. It was used as such throughout those early league years. When the creation of "A" Playoff Champions trophy was introduced, in 1978, the trophy's main plate still indicated the Division "B" Champions, even though

the transition of the trophy was now awarded to the Division "A" winners.

The Nowlan trophy was refurbished in Jan 2016 to the original Nowlan Trophy name for it's intended purpose of 1972. It now displays the full history details of those Playoff A winning teams.

The Mac Trophy - Playoff Award for the Champions of Division "B"

In 1978 the Mac trophy was re-purposed into the Nowlan Trophy to introduce a Division "B" Playoff Champions.  Assuming it was the Division "B" Playoff Champions trophy since 1978 then it is likely that the Mac trophy changed over at that time. The trophy main plate once displayed "League Champions" and the name plates of those league champions from 1957-to 1973.

The Mac trophy was refurbished in Jan 2016 to display the original Mac Trophy name for it's intended purpose of 1978.   The Mac trophy is known as the "B - Divison" trophy and now displays the full history details of those Playoff B winnings teams.

The Jack Szeszycki Trophy - Playoff Award for the Champions of Division "C"

In Sept 2015 the "You Don't Know Jack" trophy was created to award the winners of the Division "C" Playoff.  The Head Office Taxation Curling League has functioned with curlers of varying skill since it's creation in 1957.  The focus of the league is to maintain a fun social league with a competitive edge at each skill level.  With our league expansion to the current 14 team format, a new divisional trophy was introduced to celebrate and recognize the "C" Playoff teams that competed for the first time in 2015. With Jack Szeszycki, a "14 X award winner" and the most decorated participant of our league's 59 year history, it is fitting that the "You Don't Know Jack" branding is on the Divisional "C" Trophy for his league commitment, dedication and perseverance in "Always Aiming to Win It All !".

The Simon Turner Memorial Trophy - Good Sport Award

In 2001 the Good Sport Award was introduced and in 2006 re-titled to The Simon Turner Memorial  Award.  The H.O.T. (Head Office Taxation) curling league started out as a competitive league in the  mid 1950's, by the mid 1980's it had changed focus to more of a social aspect.  Curlers of varying  skill levels have been competing together since the 1957 season.

The "Good Sport Award" was presented for the first time in 2001.  In 2006, we were saddened by the untimely passing of a long-time member who embodied the spirit for which the trophy is recognized.  As a means of refocusing on the social side of the game, we recognize an individual (or two) on an  annual basis who contribute significantly to the spirit of goodwill and sportsmanship in the league.  Whether playing with or against Simon Turner, you could not tell which team was leading or by how  much.  He always had a smile and a sharp and ready wit.  The naming of the Good Sport Award is  intended to keep Simon's spirit alive and to maintain the focus of a friendly curling environment.

The Honourable Mention Meritorious Award -  HMMA Team Award

In 2014 the HMMA "Best of the Rest" team award was introduced and presented for the first time. The focus of this award is to highlight the HOT curling team that contributed significantly to the spirit of competition and sportsmanship while performing at a high competitive level within our standings. The naming of the HMMA Team recognizes one of the top  teams that competed very well but fell just short of attaining a divisional championship in that year's playoffs.  Just as the Simon Turner Award is intented to bring focus to the spirit of the sport, this team award brings focus to a very good team.

The Cellar Dweller Award

A long time ago the league had a "Silver Broom" award that was presented to the last place team, unfortunately the trophy got "lost" somewhere along the way (rumor has it that it made its way into someone's fireplace). In 2013 the spirit of providing the last place team with an honorary "good try" award was revived with the introduction of the "Cellar Dweller" trophy, though the player names are not recorded (to protect the innocent).
